Arts & Crafts Leader
Job Description

 

 

General Responsibility:

To prepare and deliver weekly, 1 hour daily "electives" to participants aged 13-18. To work with the Program Coordinator to implement and fulfill art related needs for special & evening program. To deliver the art studio component of the "Crossing Cultures through the Arts" Workshop, as needed. To translate knowledge of subject matter into an effective, experiential form appropriate for youth participants of varied cultures, consistent with principles and philosophy of the Global Youth Village.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Training and experience in a wide variety studio art activities for varied group sizes and ages.
* Desire and ability to work with youth in an outdoor, residential setting
* Ability to maintain equipment in safe, working condition
* Ability to manage medium to large groups
* Ability to meet needs of individuals in group
* Ability to adapt to teaching style during changing circumstances
* Ability to inspire enthusiasm and participation
* Able to create a harmonious group dynamic
* Organized, able to plan daily content of activities, and to maintain the art studio in a clean. Orderly manner
* Ability to relate to one's peers
* Ability to accept guidance and supervision, and seeks guidance when needed
* Good character, integrity, and flexibility
* Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-motivated
* Conversant in English
* Age 21 or older

Responsible to: Staff Director

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Lead studio art activities, including special, weekend and all-camp events.
2. Set up the art studio during staff training.
3. Maintain standards of quality, order, and safety in the art studio.
4. Orient staff and youth as to standards of behavior in the art studio.
5. Devise schedules and program outlines in coordination with the Program Coordinator and the CCTA Instructor within the arts area. (Also included "Electives" and "Special Activities.")
6. Plan and deliver specifics of day to day activities.
7. Teach and monitor proper uses of equipment and supplies; requisition new supplies as needed. Monitor expenditures of art studio budget.
8. Conduct daily checks and maintain order & cleanliness of the art studio.
9. Identify maintenance needs on facility and equipment, and report to maintenance staff.
10. Communicate with administrative and cabin staff as necessary regarding an individual youth's performance and/or special needs.
11. Clean and close down the art studio at end of the summer, including inventory and proper storage of equipment and supplies.
12. Evaluate current season and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and programming for the following summer.

Essential Functions:

1. Ability to effectively communicate with groups participating (age and skill level), and to provide necessary instruction to youths and/or staff.
2. Ability to communicate and train staff and youths in safety regulations and emergency procedures related to program area.
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to program area.
4. Physical strength to provide for a safe activity.
5. Ability to observe youth behavior assesses appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
6. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
