General Responsibilities:
To serve as a live-in counselor to a
group of youths in cabin, helping them adjust to the Global Youth Village
culture. To create a warm, harmonious cabin environment, working cooperatively
with other members of counseling team. To maintain standards of health,
safety and program quality consistent with program goals. To create
opportunities for cultural sharing within the cabin, and to facilitate
cross-cultural communication and understanding.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Proven ability to work with youths
and adults in a residential camp setting
* One year or season's experience working with youth. (Can be a summer
at a residential camp.)
* Ability to relate to peers and work effectively as a team
* Good character, integrity, adaptable, flexible and of high stamina.
* Ability to lead and moderate discussions
* Conversant in English
* High school graduate with at least one-year post-secondary school
education or work experience
* 21 years of age or older

Specific Responsibilitiess
1. Lives in the cabin with youths
2. Attends to the daily functions and needs of the cabin group and individual
youths:
a. wake up
b. cabin clean-up, and general order and cleanliness of cabin environment
c. takes meals with cabin group
d. cabin coverage
e. Is in attendance until 'lights out'
f. monitors health and personal hygiene of youths
g. Interacts with cabin to facilitate social relationships
h. is aware of youths' attendance record at activities
i. Informs cabin of daily events.
j. coordinates night time cabin coverage with counseling team
3. Guides cabin group to create a positive, constructive environment.
4. Introduces youth to the 'Honor Code' and how it applies to their
daily lives.
5. Attends evening programs with cabin group.
6. Plans and leads Cabin Nights.
7. Leads or moderates cabin discussions on a variety of topics.
8. Assists youths in selecting their weekly schedules.
9. Offers consistent guidance/discipline as necessary, in cooperation
with other members of counseling team.
10. Attends regular counselor meetings and reports about cabin dynamics
and individual youths as necessary. Represents youth views, opinions,
and wishes to administrative staff.
11. Facilitates an action team (leadership project) and/or teaches a
weekly elective on a subject of personal expertise.
12. Offers special activities in subject of expertise in late afternoons
or weekends, as other duties allow.
13. Completes cabin counseling evaluates and cabin cleaning procedures
at the end of the season.
Essential Functions:
1. Ability to effectively manage a group
of 6-12 youth. Provides necessary instruction and guidance to youths
throughout the day.
2. Ability to observe youth behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce
appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide
appropriate guidance and discipline.
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental
and other hazards related to any activities one may be overseeing.
4. Possesses endurance required to maintain constant supervision of
youth in a rural, residential camp setting.
5. Cognitive ability to plan and conduct cabin activities.
