General
Responsibility:
To
plan and deliver the "Mass Media & You" Workshop curriculum
to youths ages 13-18, approximately 2 - 3 hours / day, 4 - 5 days /
week. To translate knowledge of subject matter into an effective, experiential
form appropriate for youth participants of varied cultures, consistent
with principles and philosophy of the Global Youth Village.
Minimum Qualifications:
*
Minimum of one year professional teaching experience in areas of media
literacy, media studies, mass communication or media production to teenagers
* Bachelor's degree, Master's degree or research / work experience in
mass communication, journalism, media studies, media globalization,
media and culture
* Proven expertise and in-depth, facile understanding of how mass media
relates to popular & traditional cultures, youth development and
globalization issues
* Youth media production skills desirable (digital video editing, radio,
newspaper/magazine)
* Ability to teach media literacy using experiential methods, and to
use multimedia technology to conduct workshop.
* Age 21 and over
* Organized, able to plan daily content of workshop
* Ability to adapt teaching style to individual needs
* Ability to create a harmonious group dynamic
* Ability to lead and moderate discussions
* Ability to work well in a team
* Ability to relate to one's peers
* Ability to accept guidance and feedback, and seek guidance when needed
* Good character, integrity, and adaptability
* Enthusiasm, sense of humor, flexibility, and self-motivation
* Fluent in English
* Desire and ability to work with youth in an untraditional educational
setting (i.e. - residential, outdoors, experiential)
Responsible
to: Workshop Director
Specific
Responsibilities:
1.
Plan and deliver curriculum, with guidance from the Workshop Coordinator
(or other Administrative Staff). (Approximately 13 teaching days)
2. Monitor use of equipment and supplies in workshop area; requisition
equipment and supplies as needed.
3. Set up teaching space and maintain order and cleanliness throughout
the summer.
4. Identify maintenance needs of facility and equipment, and report
to maintenance staff.
5. Communicate with administrative and cabin staff as necessary, regarding
an individual youth's performance and/or special needs.
6. Teach occasional special activities or "electives" related
to workshop subject matter or in an area related to a special skill,
during non-workshop times.
7. Clean and close down teaching area at end of the summer, including
inventory and storing of equipment and supplies.
8. Provide detailed report and evaluation of workshop, as actually delivered,
with recommendations for next season.
9. Document new material developed for workshop.
Essential
Functions:
1.
Ability to effectively communicate with workshop group, co-instructors,
and supervisors.
2. Cognitive ability to plan and conduct activity to achieve youth development
objectives.
3. Ability to observe and assess participant behavior, enforce appropriate
safety guidelines and emergency procedures, and provide guidance and
discipline as needed.
