Pool Director
Job Description

 

 

General Responsibility:

Oversee the activities and maintenance of the Global Youth Village pool. Create a welcoming, safe recreation area for youth & staff. Train and orient the lifeguard team. Work with staff director in overseeing pool staff schedules, and problem-solve as needed. Monitor safety and hygiene standards, as recommended by the local health department, American Red Cross and the American Camping Association.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Previous experience in pool lifeguarding and teaching basic swimming activities.
* Previous experience in a management or supervisory position, preferably in a waterfront area.
* Holds or previously held American Red Cross certification for lifeguarding (or the equivalent).
* Proven knowledge of pool management, including maintenance and sanitation methods & standards.
* Ability to evaluate lifeguard skills, and provide training where needed.
* Ability to accept guidance and supervision, and seeks guidance when needed.
* Good character, integrity, and flexible.
* Fluent in English.
* Age 21 or older.

Responsible to: Staff Director

Specific Responsibilities:

* Set up pool area during staff training.
* Orient pool staff as to their responsibilities in the pool area.
* Establish safety standards & emergency procedures. Train all staff in these.
* Orient program & counseling staff as to their responsibilities in the pool area.
* Coordinate the evaluation of the swimming abilities of staff and youths upon their arrival.
* Evaluate pool staff's knowledge and skills of safety principles and practices, providing further training and refresher sessions as needed.
* Train assistant lifeguards / lookouts in basic water safety standards & out-of-water rescue techniques.
* Monitor the maintenance of safety and sanitation standards, conducting regular checks and ensuring logbooks are properly kept.
* Monitor use of equipment and supplies. Identify maintenance needs and report them to administration.
* Communicate with administration and cabin staff as necessary regarding an individual youth's performance and/ or special needs.
* Oversee cleaning of the pool area at end of the season. Complete evaluations with lifeguard team, with recommendations for next season.

Essential Functions:

* Ability to effectively communicate with groups participating in pool activities, and to provide necessary instruction to youth's and/ or staff.
* Ability to communicate and train staff and youths in safety regulations and emergency procedures.
* Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other pool related hazards.
* Ability to observe youth behavior to assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide guidance and discipline.
