Rock Climbing Leader
Job Description

 

General Responsibility:

To coordinate activities within program area, while maintaining Legacy's standards of quality and safety. To translate knowledge and skill of program area that is understandable and inspiring to youth, and consistent with principles and philosophy of the Global Youth Village.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Documented training/certification and a minimum of one year professional experience in rock climbing and/or adventure programs
* Ability to lead youth through basic rock climbing on the Village site.
* Ability to assess the safety of maintain equipment in proper working condition
* Ability to meet needs of individuals in group
* Ability to adapt to teaching style during changing circumstances
* Able to create a harmonious group dynamic
* Age 21 and over
* Current first aid and CPR certification
* Organized, able to plan daily content of activities
* Ability to relate to one's peers
* Ability to accept guidance and feedback, and seeks guidance when needed
* Good character, integrity, and flexibility
* Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-motivated
* Fluent in English
* Desire and ability to work with youth in an outdoor, residential setting

Responsible to: Staff Director

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate activities within program area.
2. Sets up program area during staff training.
3. Maintain standards of quality and safety in program area.
4. Devise program activities in accordance with criteria outlined by administrative staff.
6. Plan and deliver specifics of day to day activities ("electives" and "special activities").
7. Monitor uses of equipment and supplies; requisition as needed.
9. Maintain order and cleanliness of supply/equipment storage area throughout the summer in cooperation with other staff utilizing same storage space.
10. Identify maintenance needs on facility and equipment, and report to maintenance staff.
11. Communicate with administrative and cabin staff as necessary regarding an individual youth's performance and/or special needs.
12. Provide special assigned weekend activities related to program area.
13. Clean and close down area at end of the summer, including inventory and storing of equipment and supplies.
14. Evaluate current season and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and programming for the following summer.

Essential Functions:

1. Ability to effectively communicate with groups participating (age and skill level), and to provide necessary instruction to youths and/or staff.
2. Ability to communicate and train staff and youths in safety regulations and emergency procedures related to program area.
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to program area.
4. Physical strength to conduct a safe activity (belay) and an emergency rescue, if needed.
5. Ability to observe and assess youth behavior, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
6. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
