Youth Director
Job Description

 

General Responsibilities

Establishes relationships with youths and ensures their needs and goals are being met. Ensures that sponsors' and parents' criteria for involvement are being met. Serves as a trainer, mentor and manager for the counseling staff, helping them manage day-to-day tasks and challenges. Starts the program with the correct tone by coordinating the participants' Washington, D.C. experience. Maintains moral and keeps communication flowing among counseling team. Meets regularly with counselors, workshop staff, and administrative staff to monitor and foster the young people's experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

* College graduate with at least 2 years professional youth work and staff management experience, and at least 21 years of age
* Previous Global Youth Village experience, as a participant or staff member.
* Previous professional level counseling experience with youth, ages 14-18, preferably in a residential, camp setting.
* Previous experience developing and delivering training programs for adult staff.
* Demonstrates an understanding of the demands of working in a multi-cultural environment, and is able to apply Legacy's training principles in effective multi-cultural team building.
* Has proven team-leading experience. Able to effectively manage conflicts using a variety of communication styles.
* Ability to create a harmonious group dynamic within cabin group, and among counseling team.
* Flexible and open to approaching youth work from a variety of methods.
* Ability to identify appropriate instances to initiate communication with administrative staff concerning youth and or counseling team needs and problems.
* Proven ability to effectively accept & offer feedback, and seek guidance when needed.
* Thorough understanding of Legacy's leadership training model and cross-cultural sensitivity. Able to harmonize own personal style of instruction with Legacy's approaches.
* Ability to approach tasks creatively and flexibly, and to use existing circumstances as learning opportunities.
* Enthusiastic, self-motivated with high personal stamina. Good character, integrity, self-reflective.
* Ability to inspire groups & individuals.
* Ability to observe staff facilitation techniques and their impact on the youths learning process.
* Possesses strength and endurance required to manage staff and youth in a rural, residential camp setting.
* Knowledge of Washington, D.C. area preferred.
* Fluent in English.

Responsible to: Global Youth Village Director

Specific Responsibilities:
1. Work closely with Washington, D.C. trip staff, overseeing the youths' experience during arrivals.
2. Work closely with the administrative team to identify individual youth's needs and goals.
3. Establish goals and relationships with each participant.
4. Communicate group and personal dynamics observed to Cabin Counselors and Workshop Instructors as needed.
5. Monitor workshop participation and cabin integration for each youth.
6. Monitor youth communications with family via telephone and e-mail.
7. Offer inspiration on a daily basis. Attend various staff meetings as needed.
8. Encourage recognition of achievements and seek out ways to inspire youths.
9. Monitors Dining Hall experience of participants. Communicates with Food Service Manager as needed concerning menu.
10. Structure mid-session and end of session youth evaluations with the Program Team.
11. Communicate with sponsors and families as needed.
12. Works closely with the administrative staff to develop the counselors' training program.
13. Acts as a 'host counselor' & trainer during staff training.
14. Determines youth cabin groupings & counseling teams in collaboration with administrative staff.
15. Meets with select administrative staff on a regular basis to discuss cabin programming content and cabin counselors' effectiveness.
16. Plan and coordinate select staff events for maintaining moral of the counseling team
17. Lead bi-weekly counselors' meetings.
18. Communicate with the administrative staff regularly concerning youth issues & successes.
19. Conduct end-of-session evaluations (written & verbal) with counselors

Essential Functions:
1. Ability to effectively communicate with youths and staff, and to provide necessary instruction, feedback, and training.
2. Ability to observe youth behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
3. Ability to communicate to staff and youths the safety regulations and emergency procedures in case of an all-camp emergency.
4. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to area.
5. Cognitive and communication abilities to manage complex tasks with large groups, to plan and conduct cabin unit activities, and coordinate counseling team.
6. Possesses strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of youth in a rural, residential camp setting.
