Volunteer Opportunities

Workshop staff are experienced teachers or facilitators. Applicants are expected to have previous professional teaching experience in the subject area, preferably with teens. Applicants must also be proficient in designing curriculum, managing group dynamics, experiential training methods, and working with multicultural groups.

All workshop staff, in addition to teaching, take on secondary responsibilities within the Village:

• Helping design and deliver select evening program and special events;
• Daily support tasks (at minimum, being part of one meal clean up team each day);
• Workshop staff may also take on one of the various programmatic or support roles such as pool life guarding, teaching rock climbing, or offering an afternoon elective.

WORKSHOPS:

• Green Your World: Guide youths through an exploration of the natural world and the complex issues facing global ecosystems. Inspire them to incorporate sustainable living practices into their daily lives. Explore such key concepts such as eco-tourism, permaculture, fair trade, green building, organic agriculture and renewable energy. Engage youths through experiential learning techniques. Guide youths as they devise action plans to apply in their families and schools. Facile knowledge of a broad range of environmental issues from varied perspectives is required.
• Dialogue & Peace Building: Provide a personal exploration of conflict, prejudice, and discrimination for youths from a variety of background and cultures. This workshop includes practical training in conflict management and leadership skills, as well as an exploration of prejudice and ethnic conflicts. Professional skills and experience are required in facilitation, group dynamics, conflict resolution, prejudice reduction, and methods of training in the value of diversity.
• Crossing Cultures through the Arts: Guide youths in an exploration of how the arts play a role in preserving culture and promoting social change. Oversee the development and delivery of the curriculum with other talented “artists in residences.” from various disciplines.  Plan and produce a “Fine Arts” event.  Applicants must have professional level teaching experience in either the theater arts or studio (visual) arts.  Must also have proven collaborative ability.

Each cabin is home to six to ten youths and one counselor.

Cabin life is at the foundation of creating an open and accepting environment where individuals can feel secure and comfortable.

The counseling team consists of the Counseling Coordinator and live-in counselors.  This team works together to promote sensitivity to other cultures, encourage personal development, and ensure safety. They provide role models of service, cooperation, care, and respect.

Previous experience as counselors with youth is preferred. Other important qualities include an ability to assess and adjust group dynamics and handle numerous details on a day-to-day basis.

All cabin counselors, in addition to tending to the needs of their cabin groups, fulfill one or more of the various programmatic, administrative or support roles needed at the GYV.  These secondary roles also allow the counseling staff to interact with the young people in different ways, outside of the cabin.

Kitchen staff do not have counseling responsibilities. Yet, as an integral part of the staff team, food service staff are encouraged to participate fully in the Global Youth Village, developing friendships with other staff and young people, while enjoying the cultural, educational, and recreational activities as responsibilities allow.

Legacy’s vegetarian kitchen serves three home-style meals daily to approximately 90 people, with international entrees from countries such as Greece, the Middle East, India, Japan, and Nigeria. During their 8-9 hour workday, all kitchen staff share in the tasks of dish washing, stocking and cleaning, dining hall setup and general orderliness. Positions include:

The Health Care staff person, in addition to his or her primary health care role, fulfills one or more of various programmatic, administrative or support roles, as well as other support functions as outlined in the general job description.

At the Global Youth Village, we like to offer a variety of activities to the young people. The staff team, therefore, needs to collectively possess a wide array of talents and abilities.

In addition to a counseling, teaching or health care duties, staff applicants are encouraged to apply for one (or more!) of the following positions according to your interest and expertise.

• Elective Leader: Plan and teach a weekly elective. Electives are 3- 4 day courses taught by Village staff and designed to offer youths sports, arts, intellectual or leadership skill building. They provide a chance for the youth to explore individual interests and give staff an opportunity to share varied skills or knowledge. Electives range from beginning swimming to batik, ultimate Frisbee for beginners, basic sign language or creative writing. Little or no teaching requires; training provided for those with no experience in curriculum design
• Youth Services Coordinator:   Work closely with Youth Outreach Coordinator and GYV Director in supporting the overall youth experience.  This includes:  monitoring the use of the computer lab by youths and other staff,  facilitating a youth team in creating copy for the GYV blog, and photo documentation.
• Art Studio Coordinator: Manage the Village art studio. Oversee activities that take place in the studio, in addition to managing the art supply budget and maintaining the space in a clean and orderly manner. Promote the integration of the arts within the workshops by planning varied art activities with workshop instructors. Work with other staff to draw out their artistic teaching talents.
• Arts & Crafts Leader: Plan and teach varied art activities to Village youths during electives, free time activites or during special weekend events. Help with set design for evening programs. Work as part of a talented team with skills in pottery, weaving, drawing, crafts, silk screening, graphic design and set design.
• Pottery & Ceramics Leader: Teach weekly pottery “electives.” Knowledge of hand building and wheel use, plus ability to safely operate and care for a kiln required.
• Theater Leader: Use creative dramatics, theater games, acting training, and other techniques to help youths explore and express of issues of concern during weekly “electives” or for special events.
• Sports & Recreation Leader: Organize and deliver camp-wide recreational events such as the “Legacy Olympics,” scavenger hunts, sports tournaments. Previous event organization experience required. Experience in non-competitive helpful. Applicants should be outgoing and have an ability to motivate & manage large groups. Duties also include maintaining sports equipment.
• Team & Non-Competitive Games Leader: Lead workshop and cabin groups through ground initiatives and other team building activities. Documented experience and training in leading and debriefing ground initiatives required. Skills are also needed in evaluating the safety of and conducting minor repairs of equipment.
• Rock Climbing Leader: Teach beginning rock climbing during “electives” on the Global Youth Village’s natural climbing site. Must be an experienced rock climbing teacher. Certification from a nationally recognized organization is required. First aid & CPR certification is also required.
• Pool Director: Oversee the activities and maintenance of the pool. Train and orient the lifeguard team, oversee their schedules, and problem solve as needed. Maintain safety and hygiene standards. Requires prior experience as a certified lifeguard for at least 6 months, but need not be currently certified. Proven knowledge of pool management and maintenance also required.
• Lifeguard: Serve as part of a team of pool staff to create a welcoming, safe swimming area. Uphold safety and hygiene standards. Current American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) is required. First aid & CPR certification also necessary. Swimming instruction experience helpful.
• Assistant Lifeguard: Serve as part of the pool staff team, to create a welcoming, safe waterfront area, and uphold safety and hygiene standards. Must be a good swimmer. No certification required. Training provided.
• Logistic & Scheduling Coordinator: Work as part of the administrative team to plan and implement program logistics: designing daily schedules, planning trips, coordinating usage of recreational facilities, plus “electives” & special activities coordination. Must be very organized, facile at adjusting staffing assignments as special needs arise, and able to manage numerous details. Strong word processing skills required.
• Arabic Language Instruction: Provide beginning level instruction in Modern Standard Arabic. Stimulate their interest in further study and in the potential for exciting career and international study opportunities. Applicants must be fluent in Arabic, with previous classroom teaching experience preferred.
• English Language Instruction: Use innovative, enjoyable, accelerated methods to improve English fluency (beginning, intermediate and advanced levels). Previous classroom teaching experience is preferred.
• Stage Technician: Support and enhance all-village events through the set-up and monitoring of sound system, slide or LCD projectors, and any associated lighting needs (4-5 evening a week). Assist in the set-up and break down of sets. Training or experience in the operating of simple sound systems required. Experience operating LCD projectors preferred. (Professional stage technician experience not necessary.)
• Health Care Manager: Work as part of a team to ensure the health and well being of all Villagers. Under the guidance of a licensed professional nurse, assist in providing basic health care. Duties include: assisting with health screenings and 1st aid, assisting in care of ill staff or participants, escorting people to seea local physician, stocking 1st aid kits, administering some routine medications. Must be 21 years of age or older, with a valid U.S. driver’s license. Current 1st aid and CPR certification is also required.
• Housekeeping & Program Set-up: Prepare, clean and set-up guest facilities and general program areas. Duties also include delivering supplies and equipment to bathhouses, cabins, and program areas. Must be a licensed driver (U.S. or Canadian). No prior experience necessary, but must be self-motivated, able to work in the summer heat, and organized!
• Prep Cook: Work part time with the food service team, preparing salads, learning how to make bread, or special international dishes. (See Food Service for more details.)
• Trip Leaders: Select staff may be assigned to serve as trip leaders / facilitators to lead a youth group during a short stays in Washington DC (just prior to the beginning of each session) or during day trips to meet with local community leaders during the  “Community Involvement Program” at the end of the summer.  Applicants need to have previous trip leading experience, be 1st aid & CPR certified, able to serve as a driver (21+, U.S. drivers license required), plus a facile knowledge of the Washington, D.C. area.
• Driver: Select staff who are 21 years or older, with good driving records & a U.S. license may be assigned for various short term driving needs.  These may include local airport pick-ups or drop- offs on arrival and departure days, escorting youths to church services on Sundays, or the occasional shopping trip for program supplies.

Deliver the Dialogue Workshop curriculum to youths ages 14-18, approximately 2 hours/day, 5 days/week. Translate knowledge of subject matter into an effective, experiential form appropriate for youth participants of varied cultures, consistent with principles and philosophy of the Global Youth Village.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum of two years advanced training and/or professional teaching experience in area of diversity training, prejudice reduction, conflict resolution or other related fields
• Age 21 and over
• Ability to teach using experiential methods
• Proven expertise in personal delivery of subject matter
• Organized, able to plan daily content of workshop
• Ability to adapt teaching style to individual needs
• Ability to create a harmonious group dynamic
• Ability to lead and moderate discussions

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Plan and deliver workshop curriculum, with guidance from the Workshop Coordinator (or other Administrative Staff) (Approximately 7-10 teaching days per session.)
2. Monitor use of equipment and supplies in workshop area; requisition equipment and supplies as needed.
3. Set up teaching space and maintain order and cleanliness throughout the summer
4. Identify maintenance needs on facility and equipment, and report to maintenance staff.
5. Communicate with administrative and cabin staff as necessary, regarding an individual youth’s performance and/or special needs.
6. Clean and close down teaching area at end of the summer, including inventory and storing of equipment and supplies.
7. Provide detailed report and evaluation of workshop, as actually delivered, with recommendations for next season.
8. Document new material developed for workshop.

Secondary Responsibilities:

1. Assist in the design and delivery of select evening programs or other special events, at least once a week.
2. Teach occasional afternoon activities or electives, or fulfill some other secondary programmatic role of interest

Serve as a key member of a team that monitors group dynamics for the entire Village, adjusting programming accordingly.  Work closely with fellow staff to infuse themes of teamwork, leadership and community into all-Village activities (orientation days, closing days, evening and weekend programs).  Coordinate the afternoon electives and recreational activities so youths can experience new things and build friendships.  Direct evening gathering and reflection time.  Assist in delivery of evening and weekend programming. “Trainer of trainers” experience preferred.  Must be enthusiastic and self-motivated, with high personal stamina, and have an ability to inspire groups & individuals.

Minimum Qualifications:

• College graduate with at least 2 years professional youth work and staff management experience, and at least 25 years of age
• Previous professional level administrative, programming or counseling experience with teens, preferably in a residential, camp setting.
• Previous experience developing and delivering training programs for adults.
• Ability to creatively schedule and plan programs.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the demands of working in a multi-cultural environment, and is able to apply Legacy’s training principles in effective multi-cultural team building.
• Has proven team-leading experience. Able to effectively manage conflicts using a variety of communication styles.
• Ability to create a harmonious group dynamic within a variety of GYV group settings. Ability to manage large groups.
• Flexible and open to approaching youth work from a variety of methods.

Specific Responsibilities

During Staff Training:

1. Gather information about staff talents, skills and specific areas of expertise; work with administrative team and special programs coordinator to develop potential afternoon electives, free time activities, evening and weekend events using staff resources
2. Develop rapport with staff who deliver daily afternoon activities and help them develop effective lesson plans as needed
3. Assist in the coordination of Staff Cultural Sharing Night
4. Co-plan orientation activities and assist in preparing staff for their roles for Week One.

When program is “in session”:

1. Coordinate the offering of electives. Youths sign up for one to two  electives per session which is a 1.25 hour activity offered for 3-4 days. Activity choices include an array of arts, sports, beginning swimming, languages, dance, public speaking, team building, and leadership development. On a daily basis, observe the delivery of electives and offer advice and support to staff as needed.
2. On a daily basis, work with staff on free time offerings. These are 1.5 hour activities offered in late afternoon. Often youths come and go out of these activities. Examples include: DVD documentary and discussion, groups meet to plan an evening cultural focus, bracelet making, juggling, pool open, volleyball, basketball, ping-pong tournament, nature walk etc.
3. Coordinate gathering time every evening and promote recognition of achievements.
4. Daily meetings with various general and administrative staff to keep communications flowing.
5. Assist in physical set-up, planning and delivery of evening and weekend special events.
6. Assist in the coordination of Orientation Day and closing reflection activities.

Secondary Responsibilities:

• Teach occasional special activities in a special skill area of choice.
• May also service as a pool lifeguard if certified
• Fulfill other support functions as outlined in general job description, applicable to all staff (i.e. being part of a meal clean-up team once a day, helping set up and break down facility, etc.)

Essential Functions:

1. Ability to effectively communicate with youths and staff, and to provide necessary instruction, feedback, and training.
2. Ability to observe youth behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
3. Ability to communicate to staff and youths the safety regulations and emergency procedures in case of an all-camp emergency.
4. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to area.
5. Cognitive and communication abilities to manage large, complex event management.
6. Cognitive and communication abilities to manage complex tasks with large groups, to plan and conduct cabin unit activities, and coordinate counseling team.
