Elective Leader

Plan and teach an elective (a 3 day course lasting 1 hour a day). Elective Leaders teach 1or 2 electives per session. Collaborate with the Activity Coordinator to plan a diverse array of electives matching the interest of all participants. Translate knowledge of subject matter into an effective, experiential form appropriate for youth participants of varied cultures, consistent with principles and philosophy of the Global Youth Village.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Expertise in a subject area appropriate for electives. Examples include (but not limited to): studio arts, beginning swimming, language instruction, creative writing, rock climbing instruction.
  • Ability to maintain equipment in safe, working condition
  • Ability to manage small to medium sized groups
  • Ability to meet needs of individuals in group, including health and safety considerations
  • Ability to adapt to teaching style during changing circumstances
  • Ability to inspire enthusiasm and participation
  • Able to create a harmonious group dynamic
  • Organized. Able to plan daily content of activities, and to maintain teaching space in a clean, safe, orderly manner

Responsible to: Activity Coordinator

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with Activity Coordinator to identify, plan and implement weekly electives.
  2. Set up teaching space, as assigned by Activity Coordinator.
  3. Maintain standards of quality, order, and safety in assigned teaching space.
  4. Orient youths to (and maintain) standards of behavior & safety at beginning of each elective. Includes teaching and monitor proper uses of equipment and supplies
  5. Requisition elective supplies as needed from Activity Coordinator in a timely manner
  6. Communicate with Activity Coordinator, other members of administrative team, and cabin staff as necessary regarding an individual youth’s performance and/or special needs.
  7. Clean teaching space and store supplies at end of each elective session.
  8. Evaluate each elective taught and make recommendations for programming, equipment, and supplies for the following session / summer.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with groups participating (age and skill level), and to provide necessary instruction to youths and/or staff.
  • Ability to communicate and train youths in safety regulations and emergency procedures related to program area.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to program area.
  • Physical ability to provide for a safe activity.
  • Ability to observe youth behavior assesses appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
  • Cognitive and physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the program area activities to achieve youth development objectives.
