The Health Care staff person, in addition to his or her primary health care role, fulfills one or more of various programmatic, administrative or support roles, as well as other support functions as outlined in the general job description.

Health Care Manager

Work under the guidance of the Health Care Coordinator (an RN) to provide basic health services. Monitor the health, cleanliness, and risk management standards of the overall program. Provide / ensure adequate health conditions for all.  Duties include: assisting the nurse with health screenings and general first aid, assisting in care of ill staff or participants, escorting people to physicians for treatment, stocking first aid kits, administering some routine medications. Must be 21 years of age or older, with a valid U.S. driver’s license and a good driving record. First aid and CPR certification is also required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youths (ages 13-18) and adults, preferably in a health care role.
  • Ability to establish work priorities, to respond to unanticipated needs and emergencies, and work under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others (oral & written).
  • Desire and ability to work in a rural, camp setting.
  • Fluent in English; ability to converse in other languages helpful.
  • Current CPR and first aid certifications; prefer EMT or Wilderness Response training.
  • Minimum age, 21 years old.
  • Valid, U.S. or Canadian driver’s license, with a good driving record.
  • Interest in health care, homeopathy, and multicultural approaches to health and illness.

Responsible to: Health Care Coordinator

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Assist RN in establishing system and carrying out health screening of arriving and departing staff and participants, and a system of screening for out-of-camp trips.
  2. Set-up Health House.
  3. Stock and issue first aid kits to all cabins and activity areas. Have travel first aid kits and release forms on hand for trips out-of-camp.
  4. Ensure each staff member and participant has a health history form on file, as required, along with medical releases from parents or guardians.
  5. Conduct inventory of supplies and place orders as needed, ensuring timely arrival of supplies. Monitor budget.
  6. Implement appropriate first aid measures as needed, reporting such incidents to the RN, and referring people to the RN as needed.
  7. Assist RN in implementing medical routines including record keeping in medical log, disposal of medical waste, and administering select routine medication, managing and safeguarding medications.
  8. Cover the health house during open hours (two 30 minute periods per day) to:
    a. administer medications as guided by RN
    b. administer general first aid
    c. screen and refer to RN as needed for health problems
  9. Arrange appointments and escort youths or staff to physicians for treatment.
  10. Assist with the filing of health insurance claims.
  11. Participate in and assist RN in leading specific topics of staff training pertaining to health and safety, CPR, first aid, and universal precautions for infection control.
  12. Assist RN in completing and filing accident and incident reports.
  13. Monitor health of staff, including weekly screening of food service staff on a weekly basis.
  14. Cover or arrange coverage for the health house when a participant is admitted for rest, care and/or isolation.
  15. Keep the Health House clean and orderly.
  16. Along with the nurse, monitor / evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions and suggest modifications that would create more healthful conditions in the camp.
  17. Perform other duties as necessary. Some duties may be reassigned or others may be added as needs arise.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and delivery of select evening programs or other special events, approximately once a week.
  • Teach occasional afternoon activities or electives or fulfill some other programmatic role of interest
  • Fulfill other support functions as outlined in the general job description, applicable to all staff (i.e. being part of a meal clean-up team once a day, helping set up and break down facility, etc.)

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to effectively communicate with youths, staff and supervisor.
  2. Ability to communicate to staff and youths the safety regulations and emergency procedures in case of an all-camp emergency.
  3. Visual, tactile, auditory and ambulatory ability to identify and respond to medical emergencies, and environmental and other hazards related to area.
  4. Cognitive and communication abilities to carry out specific responsibilities of the position.

Health Care Coordinator

Monitor the health, cleanliness, and risk management standards of the overall program. Provide / ensure adequate health conditions for all. Must be a registered nurse, eligible for licensure in Virginia. CPR and first aid certified, and a valid drivers license. Knowledge of homeopathy and tropical diseases helpful but not necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) in Virginia as a registered nurse.
  • Experience in working with youths, ages 13-18, and adults, in a health care setting, preferably outpatient.
  • Training and experience in treating childhood and adolescent diseases and injuries.
  • Ability to implement the Global Youth Village health care plan and maintain records.

  4. Conduct inventory of supplies and place orders as needed, ensuring timely arrival of supplies. Monitor budget.
  5. Set up system for health screening of staff and youths, as well as a system for health screening for trips out-of-camp.
  6. Participate and lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to health and safety, CPR, first aid, risk management, and use of universal precautions for infection control.
  7. Keep accident / incident reports for risk-management assessment.
  8. Establish overall emergency communications system, and train staff in how to activate this system.
  9. Consult with the Pool Director, Rock-Climbing Instructor, Sports & Recreation Leader, & other staff engaged in high-risk activities to set-up an emergency communication system at their related program sites.
  10. Provide competent first aid and emergency treatment for sudden illnesses and injury. Follow appropriate medical routines including record keeping, proper disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, filing insurance claims, and utilizing standing orders.
  11. Ensure coverage of the Health House, especially when youth are present.
  12. Ensure emergency transportation is always available for nursing staff use.
  13. Attend counselor’s meetings on a regular basis, to keep abreast of behavioral and social issues among the youths, and to report health & safety trends to staff team.
  14. Post hours for daily medications and health call.
  15. Make appointments, as needed, with medical / dental professionals in local community, arranging or providing transport as needed.
  16. Monitor health of all youths and staff, especially kitchen staff. Conduct weekly infection checks for kitchen staff.
  17. Oversee prevention and control of contagious diseases.
  18. Monitor safety and sanitation procedures.
  19. Monitor and evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions, and suggest modifications that would create more healthful conditions.
  20. Conduct end-of-season inventory of Health House supplies.
  21. Prepare a summary and evaluation of the summer season, including reports on health problems, evaluating Health House procedure and role, and making recommendations for the following season.
