Art Studio Manager & Art Instructor

The GYV Art Studio is at the heart of daily GYV activities.  It is the place youth gravitate to to relax, get creative and to connect with one another, reinforcing bonds of friendship.  The Global Youth Village seeks a creative, dynamic and professional arts instructor to teach studio arts and coordinate the Village-wide arts program.  This individual will coordinate afternoon arts program, including teaching “electives“, optional free time activities, coordinating a camp-wide “arts evening” one day per session, and supporting / assisting staff and participants in incorporating the arts in to varied special presentations or workshops.  This individual will also work with the Special Programs Coordinator to implement and fulfill art related needs for special & evening events.

This Art Studio Manager is a vital member of the Global Youth Village.  This individual cultivates an appreciate for arts, and supports participants growth, positive group dynamics and cultural exchange through the arts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Background in studio arts, passion for youth leadership, peace building, art therapy or other related field
  • Training and professional teaching experience in a variety studio art activities for varied group sizes and ages.
  • Desire and ability to work with youth in an outdoor, residential setting.  (Preferred if has previous camp experience.)
  • Ability to maintain equipment in safe, working condition
  • Ability to manage small (3-4) to large (up to 80) sized groups
  • Ability to adapt to teaching style during changing circumstances. Ability to adapt program ideas to suit varied ages, group sizes, cultures & language abilities.
  • Ability to inspire enthusiasm and participation
  • Able to manage a budget
  • Organized, able to plan daily content of activities, and to maintain the art studio in a clean, orderly manner
  • Conversant in English
  • Age 23 or older.  College graduate with teaching / training/ facilitation experience (experience with teens preferred)

Responsible to:   Program Coordinator

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. During Staff Training, work with Activities Coordinator and Special Programs Coordinator to identify staff with arts skills.
  2. Coordinate art activities to be offered in the art studio, drafting schedule of arts activities to be offered each session in collaboration with the Activities Coordinator & Special Programs Coordinator (e.g. electives, optional free time periods, and other special events).
  3. Set-up the art studios during staff training, including inventory and ordering of supplies.
  4. Design and lead specific studio art activities during weekly electives, afternoon free time periods, and during select special or weekend all-Village events.
  5. Maintain standards of quality, order, and safety in the art studio.
  6. Orient staff and youth as to standards of behavior in the art studio.
  7. Plan and deliver specifics of day-to-day activities.
  8. Teach and monitor proper uses of equipment and supplies;
  9. Monitor expenditures of art studio budget.  Requisition new supplies as needed.
  10. Maintain order & cleanliness of the art studio on a daily basis.
  11. Identify maintenance needs on facility and equipment, and report to maintenance staff.
  12. Communicate with administrative and cabin staff as necessary regarding an individual youth’s performance and/or special needs.
  13. Clean and close down the art studio at end of the summer, including inventory and proper storage of equipment and supplies.
  14. Evaluate current season and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and programming for the following summer.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the design and delivery of select evening programs and other special events as primary duties allow, 3-4 times a session.
  2. Fulfill other support functions as outlined in general job description, applicable to all staff (i.e. daily meal clean-up, helping set up and break down facility, etc.)

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to effectively communicate with groups participating (age and skill level), and to provide necessary instruction to youths and/or staff.
  2. Ability to communicate and train staff and youths in safety regulations and emergency procedures related to program area.
  3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to program area.
  4. Physical strength to provide for a safe activity.
  5. Ability to observe youth behavior assesses appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide appropriate guidance and discipline.
  6. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  7. Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the program area activities to achieve youth development objectives.
